Maya K.P – Winner of the 21st Century Emily Dickinson Award

“Verses from an Insane Heart” – A Quiet Testament to Life, Chaos, and the Beauty of Feeling Deeply

Some books don’t demand to be read—they simply wait, quietly, for the reader who’s ready to feel them. Verses from an Insane Heart, the debut poetry collection by Maya K.P, is one such offering—a tender and unpretentious exploration of the thoughts, truths, and fragile contradictions that make us human.

Awarded the 21st Century Emily Dickinson Award, Maya’s work isn’t lofty or abstract. It is rooted, personal, and alive. Her poems reflect a deeply feeling heart—one that questions, celebrates, mourns, and marvels in equal measure. From quiet reflections on life’s ordinariness to bursts of philosophical wonder, her words carry the sincerity of someone who has lived deeply and chosen to speak softly.

“I discovered poetry during my college years,” Maya shares. “It felt like the purest form of literature—something instinctive, raw, and untamed. This book is my attempt to give voice to the chaos, the beauty, and the truths that linger in a heart most might call ‘insane,’ but I believe is just deeply alive.”

Maya was born in Palakkad, Kerala, and holds a Postgraduate degree in English Literature. She has spent over 22 years as an educator, currently living and teaching in Bengaluru, India. Her life in the classroom, surrounded by minds in search of meaning, has shaped her into both a listener and a storyteller—two traits that reflect clearly in her poetry.

Her debut, Verses from an Insane Heart, is not built on literary acrobatics. Instead, it embraces simplicity and emotional clarity. Every line seems to come from a place of observation—whether it’s the sight of a morning sky, the ache of unspoken grief, or the quiet joy in an ordinary day. Her strength lies in capturing these fleeting truths and honoring them with words.

The judges of the Emily Dickinson Award praised Maya’s collection for its “emotional honesty, graceful phrasing, and poetic clarity.” Readers often describe her poems as mirrors—ones that reflect not only the poet’s inner world, but the reader’s own emotions, tucked away until now.

With this debut, Maya K.P steps into the literary world not with noise, but with presence. Her voice is not loud—it is resonant. Verses from an Insane Heart reminds us that poetry still has the power to connect, comfort, and quietly transform.
