New Delhi: Founded in 1970, TAITRA (Taiwan External Trade Development Council) is Taiwan’s foremost nonprofit trade promoting organization. Sponsored by Government of Taiwan and industry organizations, TAITRA assists enterprises to expand their global reach. Headquartered in Taipei, TAITRA has a team of 1,300 specialists and operates 5 local offices in Taiwan as well as 60+ branches worldwide. In conjunction with the Taiwan Trade Center (TTC), Taipei World Trade Center (TWTC), and Far East Trade Service (FETS), and supported by alliances with 500+ international affiliates, TAITRA has formed a global network dedicated to promoting world trade.

Economic cooperation between Taiwan and India led to the establishment of the 4 liaison offices of TWTC in India, in Mumbai (1992), Chennai (2007), Kolkata (2012) and New Delhi (2018).  With its presence in India for more than 30 years, TAITRA has been organizing trade shows such as EMMA, Smart Asia, COMTECH, most recently followed by a Taiwan Expo in May 2018 and a Bilateral Investment Agreement that December 2018. In January 2019, Taiwan Plus, an official platform was set up by Invest India and TAITRA, under the aegis of Governments of India and Taiwan.  It acts as a one-stop-shop to promote, facilitate and retain Taiwanese investments in India.

Organized by TAITRA, Taiwan Expo is its flagship exhibition to fortify the ties between Taiwan and the ASEAN countries including India. Since its inception in 2017, Taiwan Expo has emerged as a leading platform for Taiwanese businesses to explore new opportunities, exchange ideas, and forge partnerships in ASEAN, South Asia, and North America. Thus, the Expo is credited to be the premier online sourcing hub in ASEAN countries and India. It is testament of Taiwan’s strong and long-term commitment in promoting bilateral trade relationship with India.

According to the Taiwan government’s official data, India is its 14thlargest trading partner and 11th largest export destination. It is interesting to note that the bilateral trade between India and Taiwan totalled $8.46 billion in 2022, representing an increase of 9.86% over 2021.

With shared democratic values and cultural proximity aided by conducive policies, ties between India and Taiwan are set to grow stronger and TAITRA will continue to play a key role in helping India advance towards a USD 5 trillion economy.
